Error: Unexpected GAMSCMEX return code

Exclamation
Dear All,

I need your help. I couldn't find the previous similar thread, so I must signalise this problem.

I'm working with modified JRC-EU-TIMES version. I determined and run a case with CPLEX. Suddenly, after few minutes in GAMS window, I have received this communicate:

*** Error: Unexpected GAMSCMEX return code: -1073741819

This error appears usually before the solution's start or during the pre-solution (run files in the attachment). Interesting is the fact that once every dozen or so attempts the model was solved.

I tried to:
- reinstall GAMS software (ver. 35)
- install newer GAMS version (37 - the highest version according to my licence)
- run another model (JRC-EU-TIMES raw version from KANORS) and its scenarios
- loosen restrictions on the modelled system
- synchronise the entire model (all files together) again

Problem still exists. Do you have any idea what is going on? Our project have stopped and we are already resigned because we have been trying to get the model back to work for many days.

BR,
Jurand

Are you working on a VM or a regular machine? How much RAM do you have? Try monitoring the RAM usage when you launch a run.

I control a real machine via TeamViewer. My setup is:
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz

  • 32.0 GB RAM installed

  • System type 64-bit operating system, x64 processor

  • Windows 10 Pro version Version 22H2 Installed on January 21, 2022

  • OS Build 19045.3693

Earlier I had no problems with obtaining the solution. I have been working with VEDA2 and GAMS on JRC-EU-TIMES model since March 2022. Problem started to appear about few weeks ago.

According to your advise I did the monitoring. During "generating LP model TIMES" I observe increasing RAM usage (max 60% of RAM usage). After that, at "Elapsed ordering time" stage, RAM usage is max. 25,3 GB (79%). I also captured the moment the error occurred ("Pamięć" is RAM) (see attachment).

Do you think this is a hardware problem?

I believe this is a (very generic) Windows system error.  So, I don't think it has anything to do with the model as such.

The exit code -1073741819 in hex is 0xC0000005. Looking up this code in Microsoft's documentation, one can find out that it indicates the program being terminated due to some kind of an access violation. It seems that such an error can occur for a large variety of reasons. It could be a memory access violation or a file system access violation.

Searching the internet, I can find various suggestions to try and fix it, including driver updates (update or roll back), fixing corrupted registry entries or System Files (Run a System File Checker and Check Disk Utility), and using System Restore to revert to a previous state where the error did not occur.  So, it looks like it may be difficult to firmly diagnose the cause for this error.

Some years ago there has also been a post on the GamsWorld Forum on this issue, where the expert suggested contacting GAMS support with the log files and more information, see: Cplex stop Error

Thank you for indicating first "suspect" and other suggestions. I will start with Windows restoration/fixing.
I will let you know if it helps or not.
