Storage Between TS of different periods

Dear all, 

I am currently investigating different approaches to modelling Swedish hydropower in TIMES. 

To begin with, I am trying to build a detailed model of only one river with 365 timeslices, where water can be stored in a reservoir/storage between each timeslice. I get the model to work for one year, but the last timeslice (timeslice 365) always result in a "storage-activity" =  "storage-activity" in timeslice 1.

I am wondering if it is possible to store the content of the "last day of the first year" to the "first day of the second year". In my understanding it is not, but since I am new to TIMES I just wanted to make sure.

Because TIMES has been intended primarily for long-term scenario analysis, it has been specifically designed in view of using periods that include several years, typically 5 or 10 years per period.  The milestone year of each period is thus a representative year of that period.

In such a design, it would not make sense to assume that the last timeslice of each year within one period would be followed by the first timeslice in the next period. I hope you can see that? Instead, the design assumes that within each period, each individual year is followed by another year in that same period, meaning that the timeslices form a cycle, as you have noticed.

Nonetheless, in the special case, where each period consists of only a single year, it would indeed make sense to have the last timeslice of each year followed by the first timeslice in the next, and so in that case it could, in principle, be implemented in TIMES in the way you suggested. But for now, that is unfortunately not supported in TIMES.

You can of course use inter-period storage for linking storage activities between periods, albeit only on the ANNUAL level. In that way you could to some extent simulate the impacts of "wet" and "dry" years to the storage levels in subsequent years.
