Running a single region in a multi-regional model
#1
I have a question about how to run a single region in a multi-regional model? I see that the model has the feature to use the trade information from a previous run. I can’t seem to get this to work though. What sort of information should be provided for this to work?

When you unselect the other regions, a new option will appear just above the combo where you set the ending year of runs. First choose whether you want to inherit prices or levels of endogenous trades that are now exogenous (because the partner regions are not a part of this run), and then point to the GDX file of a previous run that had all regions included.

What do I have to do, if I don't want to use any of the trade information from the previous runs?

Say, I have 20 different regions in my model and simply want to solve one of these regions, complelety isolated, so without any trades, for example to check whether this region could supply its energy needs autonomously?

So in VEDA-FE in the regions frame, I only choose this region and let the model solve.
However, when looking into the results in VEDA-BE, I see trades with and from other regions.

Is it related to this button?

So far, I've helped myself to set the im- and export costs to extremely high values, making it unattractive to im- or export...
But I assume there's a better (direct) way, how to do it, right? Wink

Thanks in advance!

The way to eliminate endogenous trade (that is now exogenous) is how you have done it - make a scenario to bound or cost them out of the solution. The button you mention is to inherit the "trading environment" from a previous scenario - as Prices OR Bounds.

Thank you Amit, I did it this way and it works fine.

Do I assume correctly that "Prices" will bind the dual variable and "Bounds" will bind the primal variable of the trade-equation?
And, just to make the picture complete, what does the third option "IRE" in this case (=one single region chosen) mean?

Selecting prices will enable trade at the prices that prevailed in the selected run, and bounds will fix the trades at the levels...

"IRE" is simply the title of this combo.
