Subres File
#1
For a single region model, is there any significant advantage of using SubRes Files (to define and input data of new technologies in the SubRes Files), or new technology can be defined in BY tables? I prefer to use a single file where various fuels and processes are linked through worksheets.

For a single-region model, using SubRES files vs. Base Year (BY) tables depends on your workflow preferences and model management goals. Here are key considerations for both approaches:
Using BY Tables (Single File Approach)
Advantages:
  1. Integrated View: All data is in one file, making it easier to manage links between fuels, processes, and parameters.

  2. Simplicity: No need to manage multiple files, simplifying file version control and updates.

  3. Direct Visualization: Easier to review interdependencies across processes and commodities.

Considerations:
  • Complexity in Large Models: If the model grows, a single file can become unwieldy.

  • Data Management: Versioning and testing individual components are less modular.

Using SubRES Files (Modular Approach)
Advantages:
  1. Modularity: Technology definitions can be split into logical groups, improving file organization.

  2. Collaboration: Easier for multiple users to work on different aspects simultaneously.

  3. Selective Updates: Faster model updates since only the relevant files need to be revised.

Considerations:
  • Management Overhead: Requires careful file management to avoid version mismatches.

  • Learning Curve: If you are new to modular design, managing multiple files can seem complex.

Recommendations:
  • Small/Medium Models: Stick to BY tables in a single file for simplicity and better visibility.

  • Large/Complex Models: Consider SubRES files for modular design, especially when the model includes many technologies, fuels, and regions.

AK: The design purpose of SubRES is to enable sharing of Technology descriptions across different models. I have some multi-region models with new techs in BY when I wanted to specify regions in FI_T tables.
