"Input" parameter and flexible refinery
#1
Hi everybody,

Is there a default value for input parameter in TIAM?
For a refinery process I've got this representation

TechName
Comm-IN
Comm-OUT
Input
Share~UP
AF, Life, RESID...
Refinery
Input1

1.5

Whatever...

Input2

Input3

Output1

0.5

Output2

0.5

Output3

0.5

In the EQ_PTrans equations for the process, Input2 and Input3 never eappear, but it seems at the end that they are consumed nonetheless (FLO_IN >0), what is the law then for their consumption?

My guess would be something like

FLO_IN(Input1)/1.5+FLO_IN(Input2)+FLO_IN(Input3)=SUM(FLO_OUT(Output_i)),

Which would mean, efficiency is one for inputs 2 and 3, but the relative input shares are not fixed.

But I was no able to verify it...

Thank a lot to anyone can help here!

I don't think there is any default for Input in VEDA, and definitely there is no default for it in TIMES.

Are you sure that Input2 and Input3 do not appear in the EQ_PTRANS for Input1?

Hi Antti,

Thank for your quick answer.

I'm pretty sure input 2 does not appear in EQ_PTRANS equation for input 1 (btw there is no really dedicated equation for input 1 in this case since the PCG is NRGOut, but Input 2 never appears in any EQ_PTRANS equation for this process), and the list of equations in which Input 2 FLO_VAR appears includes COMBAL, other EQ_PTRANS... but nothing for this one.

Would it then mean that Input 2 isn't active at all? It appears at least in the topology of the process...

Well, in my version of ETSAP-TIAM there is a commodity group defined as one of the inputs (OILCRD_NL), and this group contains two commodities (OILCRD,OINCRD).  And because an Input parameter is defined for this group, the PTRANS equation for the group would thus contain the flow variables for the two individual commodities.

However, now I remember that there was also a patch to the model, which changed the Input defined for the group into an ACT_EFF defined for the group. This was done by using a scenario file.  And as a result from this patch, the Input2 and Input3 commodities then of course appeared in the corresponding EQE_ACTEFF equation instead of EQ_PTRANS.  Maybe this patch is included in your version as well?

I was considering indeed the refinery of ETSAP-TIAM...

In an earlier (2008) version, all inputs were taken into account, not only OILCRD and OINCRD, through OILCRD_N, in VT files, so I was wondering if the other commodities served at all, since their FLO variable was non-zero in VEDA-BE even for my recent version. So I built a refinery in DEMO on the same principle, and nothing happened, either to EQ_PTRANS or to EQ_ACTEFF...

But for TIAM itself it turns out you're right about the patch, it seems the other input factors are dealt with through the Misc Adj Scen file now... I don't know how I missed them in the first place, anyway thanks a lot for helping me through this!
