How to effectively impose land constraints on renewable technologies?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on deploying land constraints on renewable energy technologies. My goal is to create a scenario where technologies footprint is factored in the selection decision.

I have data on both capacity-weighted average land use and generation-weighted average land use for these technologies.

What’s the best approach to implement such constraint?

PS. I don't want to define land availability for each individual technology. I was thinking of defining a total available land in which all technologies could utilise/compete over.

I think the production level would hardly be affecting the land-use of e.g. wind power installations.  Therefore, I guess I would suggest using NCAP_COM(r,y,p,com,'IN') for defining the land requirements (com) of existing and new installations during their lifetime, and then modeling the supply, which is limited. Compared to using standard flows, that has the advantage that no topology is required for the land-use commodity (com) in the technologies, and so can be easily defined as an add-on scenario, and compared to user constraints I would say it is more transparent.  The drawback is that the land is freed up to other uses immediately after the lifetime, but I'm sure one could introduce some lags for it as well.
