CHP with Product Flexibility
#1
Hello,

I am trying to model the CHP units in my TIMES model with product flexibility. By product flexibility, I mean that it should be possible for the model to run the CHP in either Condensing mode or CHP mode depending on Electricity and Heat load.

To model the same, I am trying to model CHP unit with different efficiency parameters i.e.,
NCAP_CDME (Condensing mode Efficiency)
NCAP_BPME (Back Pressure Efficiency: Electricity + Heating Efficiency).

I am not really sure if I am modeling the process in the right manner. Because, the model does not choose the CHP as an option when modeling with the above mentioned process. However, it is the first option chosen when modelled with a fixed Power to Heat ratio.

I have also attached a screenshot of the modeled parameters. Please let me know if anyone has tried to model the CHP in such a manner before, and if I am using the right approach.

Any guidance of yours will be highly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Kushagra

You are omitting the NCAP_CHPR~UP parameter. The default value is 1, which is, however, not sensible with your efficiency parameters. The minimum sensible NCAP_CHPR value would be at least about 2.2 (with your efficiency values). I hope you are able to see that?

I just tried with a test model, including a similarly defined CHP process, but adding CHPR~UP = 2.2, and it worked well.  I also checked all the equations, and they were indeed correct. If you still have a problem with the flexible CHP process, please provide the full input files (*.DD and *.RUN) for a test model manifesting the problem you are seeing.

Thank you so much Antti for your quick response. I was indeed missing the CHPR value. And, it works well after the change.
